A core part of our mission, the Institute's Educational programs focus on two primary initiatives, Academics and Outreach.

Academics

Overview
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research is committed to the economic transformation of Southside Virginia, understanding that this will require the need to increase the educational opportunities available to the region's citizens. Academic programs offered through the IALR are designed to address three needs: preparing a core economy workforce for the future, meeting current employer needs, and expanding access to higher education opportunities. To this end, the Institute, in partnership with state and private higher education institutions, is committed to:

1. Developing seamless educational pathways in strategic areas aligned with the Institute's research centers. These pathways will allow students to complete associate, bachelor, and graduate degree programs in focused disciplines while never having to the leave the area.

2. Offering market -driven programs to meet the expressed needs of area citizens and businesses.

3. Expanding opportunities for life-long learning in an effort to meet individuals' needs for professional growth and development.

Outreach

In addition to the envisioned economic transformation, the IALR must also help facilitate a cultural transformation. IALR  Outreach programs provide the citizens of Southside Virginia the opportunity to participate in this economic transition. Emphasizing the importance of science, math, and computer literacy, IALR Outreach programs include both youth and adults. Southside Virginia's people are diverse in background, skills, and interests requiring IALR Outreach efforts to take on many forms. Our outreach strategies will change as Southside responds to the challenges already apparent and as new opportunities emerge. Though the details and specific programs may change, the audience of IALR Outreach is clear: the children of Southside Virginia, local educators, and adults seeking new opportunities in a new economy.
