In August 2013, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) joined forces with the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance (SVRA) announcing an innovative partnership to market
Southern Virginia. With both IALR and SVRA having goals to contribute to the economic development efforts of
Southern Virginia, it made perfect sense to integrate the two groups together.
This partnership is beneficial to both organizations. For IALR, the partnership ties in well with the restructuring and renewed focus on creating economic development opportunities through research and developmental programs surrounding the regional alliance’s four target markets – aerospace, polymers and plastics, information technology and data centers, and agriculture and food and beverage processing.
For the SVRA, it gives the organization a better presence through an office at IALR and access to staff and resources. It will also provide sustained funding for the alliance; the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission’s commitment ends in the 2015 fiscal year.
"It’s a win for IALR. It’s a win for the alliance. And it’s certainly a win for the region. It helps solidify our efforts to sell this region in a true partnership."Jerry L. Gwaltney
While the SVRA’s office is located at IALR, the mission of the alliance remains committed to promoting its member counties (Patrick, Pittsylvania, Halifax and Henry) and two cities (Danville and Martinsville) to prospective industries, site selection consultants, and other regional and state economic development allies.
