"The Institute for Advanced Learning is a key force in the transformation of the region's economy. In order for the Commonwealth to compete in the global economy, it is imperative that we continue to invest in the latest technology-- using the Institute as a model of what's possible. From its research endeavors to its advanced learning programs, the Institute offers great promise for Virginia."

The economy continues to be a major talking point on the Southside, where job loss has hit the area hard.

On Friday, Senator Jim Webb toured Danville's Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.

He sat down with local community leaders to discuss how they viewed the transition in today's economy, and how to develop industry.

Webb also noted the importance of extending adult education.

"We got I think the majority of the community and the county leaders at the table to hear there thoughts on how they view the transition in the economy as we hopefully are moving to better times for people down here," Webb said.

Webb, who has a degree in engineering, says he was especially impressed by work on biofuel technology at the Institute.
