"The Institute is a great symbol of the vision and innovation that have been hallmarks of Virginia for 400 years. In just a few short years, the Institute has become a critical driver of the economic revitalization occurring across Southside, and its importance to this region and to the entire Commonwealth will only continue to grow." -- Former Governor Timothy M. Kaine |
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is currently accepting interest forms from BUSINESSES for the 2010 Summer Internship Program. IALR will place approximately 45 college students with local businesses who will provide interns with meaningful on-the-job training and real-world leadership development experiences in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The employer may be any public or private organization in Southern Virginia. The Southern Virginia region is comprised of two cities (Danville and Martinsville) and six surrounding counties (Franklin, Halifax, Henry, Mecklenburg, Patrick, and Pittsylvania).
The intent of this program is to encourage students to stay in and/or return to Southern Virginia for employment once they complete their college education. Businesses will be responsible for paying the intern $12.50/hour for 40 hours/week for 8 weeks. IALR will reimburse the business for 50% of the pay, up to $2,000. Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission. The deadline for BUSINESSES to apply for an intern is March 30, 2010; however, BUSINESSES who apply by January 4, 2010 will have their business's name and website linked on the IALR Internship page. Here's a list from Class of 2009.
