Americorps southside

The AmeriCorps program

AmeriCorps Southside is a year-long service opportunity in Danville, Virginia. The program is looking for motivated men and women. If you enjoy working with kids, you can work part-time or full-time in local schools and after-school programs, helping students learn to read, do math, or develop new skills. If you’re more of a “behind the scenes” person, we’ve got a great opportunity for you: help organize the region’s first Volunteer Center, matching people who want to volunteer with the organizations that need them. General and specific training is provided to all members.

Facts about the AmeriCorps Southside program

About the community

Danville is in the heart of “Southside Virginia,” and is located on the border with North Carolina. Danville is 45 minutes from Greensboro, and an hour from Chapel Hill. As a smaller community, we don’t have the flash and excitement of the big cities...but we do have lower living costs, a more relaxed, friendly lifestyle, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Requirements

The most important requirement is a desire to serve the community. You also need to be 18 and a high school graduate (or have earned a GED), and be able to work well in a team with many different kinds of people. Experience working with children or computer skills a plus, but not required. Members will be required to pass a background check before beginning their year of service. An AmeriCorps member must also be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States.

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a national service initiative signed into law in 1993 by President Clinton. Through AmeriCorps, individuals of all ages and backgrounds, address the nation’s education, public safety, human and environmental needs through national service. In return, AmeriCorps members receive a small living allowance and an educational award to help finance their college education or vocational training, or to pay their student loans.

While there is no typical AmeriCorps member, individuals selected for AmeriCorps must demonstrate a commitment to service, a willingness to use their time and abilities to improve the lives of others, and an interest in learning new skills. Through their service, they will bring to life the AmeriCorps ethic of responsibility and community.
