Obtaining sufficient investment capital for new business startups or expansion stages has been a difficult task for many entrepreneurs. Startup companies often get their intial funding from family and friends. Other sources of early start-up financing include angel investors and venture capitalists. The IALR Commercialization Office will assist new startups in seeking investment capital for their business needs. Here is a sampling of links to angel investment capital opportunities that are available to Southside Virginia entrepreneurs: The Virginia Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) has a means for providing early stage capital through their Gap Funds. CIT GAP Funds makes seed-stage equity investments in Virginia-based technology and life science companies with a high potential for achieving rapid growth and generating significant economic return. The Virginia Active Angel Network is based in Charlottesville, Virginia; its investors provide funding to early and seed-stage companies. In situations in which angel investment capital is not appropriate for a particular startup company, there are some other options for securing capital which may be explored, such as: The Virginia Small Business Financing Authority offers a program called the Virginia Capital Access Program that provides access to capital for Virginia businesses by encouraging banks to make loans that they would not otherwise make due to the entrepreneur's riskier profile. |
