Southside Virginia’s Past

For generations, Southside Virginia has relied on the growing and production of tobacco for its economic livelihood. Yet, the future of tobacco as an economic stable is in the decline. What is the solution?

The Future of Agriculture

Farmers throughout Southside must begin to seek alternative crops. The Institute for Sustainable and Renewable Resources (ISRR) will play an important role in transforming the existing regional tobacco base into viable new horticulture and forestry industries. Virginia Tech’s Departments of Horticulture and Forestry will utilize biotechnology to develop new high value crops for the next generation of farmers. The ISRR will create biotechnology and tissue culture laboratories, greenhouses and field-testing facilities, and a bioinformatics center, all focused on the future of agriculture in Southside.

"One of the proposed initiatives is a new type of greenhouse growing media, based on soybean oil.  Soybean oil will be converted into a biodegradable foam, useful for transplant plugs production or development of foam-sheet with grass or annual flower seeds for lawns, erosion control, and garden beds."
