Joint Unmanned Systems Test, Experimentation, and Research Site (JOUSTER)

The Joint Unmanned Systems Test, Experimentation, and Research (JOUSTER) center is dedicated to the scientifically based evaluation, comparison, and development of unmanned systems. Unmanned systems are land, air, and sea vehicles capable of being operated remotely or autonomously. JOUSTER combines Virginia Tech’s robotics research expertise, the Virginia International Raceway’s (VIR) prime topographical conditions, and the IALR’s advanced information technology infrastructure to create a research center to rapidly advance the development of unmanned systems.

Saving Lives

The emergence of the Department of Defense’s emphasis on the usage of unmanned systems in the battlefield means that soldiers can be kept out of harm’s way. JOUSTER will help pioneer this field by integrating unmanned ground, air and water-based vehicle systems and software in both a military and civilian capacity.
