About Code VA
IALR partners with CodeVA to provide high-quality computer science professional development training to teachers within the region. Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe signed a bill making computer science a part of the core curriculum for K-12 in Virginia schools. Therefore, it is essential teachers receive the proper training and understand how to incorporate computer science into their instruction. In 2018, the Southside training location (at IALR) included 75 participants, the second largest attendance in the state, and one session attracted the most attendees statewide.
Additionally, IALR is working with CodeVA on a Computer Science District Roadmap project. The Roadmap will help school divisions uncover internal division assets, identify free tools and resources that are available to them, and make recommendations for professional development and curricula to support implementing the new standards. The Roadmap will further assist school divisions in planning for professional development, assessing their current technological capabilities, and choosing appropriate curriculum and resources.
