IALR Summer Internships

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) offers an annual summer internship program to provide meaningful on-the-job training. These internships provide real-world leadership development experiences in diverse career fields such as research and data analysis, public relations, human resources, AgTech research, coding and robotics, information technology and more.

Candidates for IALR internships must be:

  • A high school graduate with plans to attend college in the fall of 2025
  • An undergraduate or graduate-level college student; OR
  • A recent college graduate, within the last 12 months.

Each internship requires 224 hours* with a weekly time commitment of 28 hours, representing an eight-week internship term. This is a paid experience with professional expectations. Interns will receive a stipend, paid semimonthly (stipend is subject to tax). The IALR mentor and intern will set a detailed work schedule during the intern orientation.

Timeline
  • Deadline: March 28, 2025, at 4:00 PM (EST)
  • Interviews: April 17 & 18, 2025 (via Microsoft Teams)
  • Selection Notification: April 25, 2025
  • Orientation: June 2, 2025, or June 9, 2025
  • Internship Luncheon & Presentations: July 31, 2025

Biotechnology Intern

Interested in microbiology and molecular biology? Join a team of IALR scientists to explore the mechanisms and underlying genetic drivers that allow bacteria that live inside plants to promote plant growth and health. Potential research topics include:

  • Genomic sequence data analysis, including assembly and annotation
  • Performing assays
  • Other lab activities

Coding and Robotics Intern

Interested in engineering and computer science? The coding and robotics internship opportunity is focused on further developing IALR’s SMART Platform robotic plant imaging system. Activities include:

  • Coding in python
  • Data analytics
  • Part design and fabrication, including 3D printing
  • Performing experiments
  • The engineering design principle will be highlighted throughout the internship experience

AmeriCorps & Lifelong Learning Intern

Our Advanced Learning division is seeking a Marketing and Program Development Intern. In this dynamic role, you will support our efforts to promote AmeriCorps service learning opportunities and enhance our lifelong learning workshops. Collaborate with our passionate team to create engaging marketing materials, assist in recruitment initiatives and contribute to the development of innovative programs that make a lasting impact. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in marketing and program management while making a difference in community development.

Communications Intern

The Communications intern will assist with promotional activities and endeavors to underscore the milestones and achievements supporting IALR’s mission of economic transformation. Communication of technical and scientific information will be expected.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Reporting on activities and events at IALR involving STEM camps, intern and research projects, and other areas that cross scientific, technical and STEM fields
  • Assisting with photography and videography of summer STEM-related events
  • Supporting graphic design projects
  • Helping produce social media editorial content
  • Supporting facility tours – specializing in a knowledge of STEM-related activities and labs
  • Assisting with technical writing
  • Providing research on technical journals and publications for IALR
  • Completing other projects as assigned

SVRA Research and Data Analysis Intern

Are you interested in shaping the future of Southern Virginia’s economy? Join the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance within the Economic Development division at IALR and gain hands-on experience supporting industry growth and attracting new businesses to the region! As an intern, you’ll:

  • Collect and analyze data to support economic initiatives

EmPOWER Intern

Join our EmPOWER team as a Summer Intern and play a crucial role in advancing our work-based learning efforts. This dynamic position involves supporting summer EmPOWER programming, including internships, teacher externships, and sector-focused camps. The intern will conduct best-practice research, administer regional work-based learning surveys, and actively participate in collaborative meetings. This position will help with the planning and execution of events and supporting marketing efforts to promote WBL across southern Virginia. Manufacturing Advancement Intern

IALR’s Manufacturing Advancement division works to support manufacturing innovation and collaboration in Southern Virginia. The Manufacturing Advancement intern will be at the forefront of integrating today’s cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) into processes within IALR’s Manufacturing Advancement Programs. Any background, be it in STEM, Business, Manufacturing, or Computer Science will have the opportunity to make strategic impacts to the Manufacturing Advancement Programs as well as to Southern VA and beyond. You will work collaboratively with our team at the beginning of your internship to create actionable internship goals. The one requirement for this internship is a deep desire to learn and employ creative thinking. The intern needs to be sensitive to the use of confidential information.

As an integral team member, you will contribute to curriculum development and academic pathway mapping within strategic GO TEC focus sectors.
