For manufacturers, technology only delivers value when your team can operate it efficiently with confidence.

At the Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, we design, deliver and sustain custom workforce training that matches your processes rather than generic curricula. From onboarding design to on‑the‑job training and train‑the‑trainer models, we build capability alongside your technology deployment or process adjustments so improvements stick.

With all of our clients and partners, whether you’re a small manufacturer in Southern Virginia making practical upgrades this quarter or a large national organization rolling out standards across multiple sites, we tailor content, pacing and formats to your operation and your shifts.

What We Focus On

We align training with the way work actually gets done on your floor — machines, parts, SOPs and takt. Every deliverable is built to be used by supervisors and operators tomorrow, not filed away.

Typical areas of support include:

  • Onboarding design and skills matrices: role‑based competencies mapped to the tasks and tools of each cell or line
  • On‑the‑job training (OJT) curricula: bite‑size modules, checklists and job aids tied to real parts and real setups
  • Train‑the‑trainer programs: develop internal coaches who can scale knowledge across shifts and sites
  • Accelerated formats: compressed sprints for urgent ramps and expanded paths for deeper upskilling
  • Assessment and acceptance criteria: performance‑based sign‑offs aligned to SOPs, safety and quality
  • Documentation integration: updates to work instructions, control plans and digital systems as skills advance

Build a Training Plan for Your Team

Integrating Training with Technology Deployment

Without structured, intentional training, even the best technology loses impact. That’s why we build training into every deployment across areas like machining, additive manufacturing, automation, metrology and digital/AI — so teams practice on real parts, real setups and real workflows.

The outcome is faster adoption, fewer mistakes and consistent performance across shifts.

Our approach helps manufacturers:

  • Reduce ramp time for new operators and cross‑trained staff
  • Sustain process improvements after the pilot team hands off
  • Align people, SOPs and quality plans so audits go faster
  • Support multi‑site rollouts with consistent standards and local flexibility

Accelerate Your Deployment with Effective Training

Proven training leadership

IALR’s workforce expertise runs deep and informs everything we deliver at the CMA. Instilling manufacturing skills at all levels and speeds is what we do:

  • Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM): Selected by the Department of War (DoW) and the U.S. Navy as a prototype in 2020, this four‑month program builds critical manufacturing skills and has produced 1,300+ graduates to date with an 85 percent graduation rate and 85 percent placement rate. Beginning in 2027, the program is expected to graduate 1,000 students per year, preparing talent for entry‑level roles in metrology, additive manufacturing, CNC machining, non‑destructive testing and welding.

  • Naval Aviation School for Additive Manufacturing (NASAM): Developed for NAVAIR, this six‑week additive training program for active‑duty Navy personnel demonstrates our ability to build high‑stakes, high‑throughput curricula that translate to the field. A similar program is under development for NAVSEA.

  • Integrated Machining Technology (IMT): CMA personnel have played a critical role in this third‑year machining program, which develops manufacturing leaders with deep process knowledge and essential manufacturing leadership skills. Now in its 11th year, IMT is a joint effort between IALR and Danville Community College.

  • Broader training initiatives: From train‑the‑trainer for machining instructors to technician training for additive manufacturing systems, to operator training on FANUC robotics and visual testing, we build capability across roles and technologies.

Leverage Our Training Playbook for Your Operation

How We Work with Your Team

We start by understanding your goals, constraints and existing materials, then co‑create a training roadmap that prioritizes low‑complexity, high‑impact wins before deeper initiatives. We pilot modules on your floor, adjust quickly and equip your trainers to carry the work forward.

A typical engagement includes:

  • Role analysis and skills‑gap assessment
  • Curriculum design with OJT modules and trainer guides
  • Pilot delivery on the floor with real parts and equipment
  • Trainer certification and coaching
  • Rollout across shifts or sites with performance tracking and refreshers

This model scales from single‑cell improvements to enterprise standards, giving your organization the capacity to adopt technology and sustain it long term.
