Every September, IALR’s Advanced Learning team works hard to acclimate and orient a new group of Dan River Year AmeriCorps members, and this year’s group of 21 are ready to begin. Stephen Stewart is returning for a second year. “It was a phenomenal feeling making connections with students and sharing my skills and personality,” said Stewart. “It was rewarding, because I knew that I was making a difference, a true impact on the students.”
IALR’s Jessica Beebe (pictured) and others recently trained the new cohort and led them through orientation. At their assigned service site, members will be paired with students needing assistance with science, math and/or reading. This year, due to COVID-19, many members will tutor and mentor students virtually and will work closely with teachers to offer assistance through platforms like Google Classroom or Canvas. All members will follow appropriate health and safety guidelines.
In addition to a year of community service, participating members are eligible for funding to pay for college or student loans. The program has positions open and candidates can apply at www.ialr.org/americorps.
