Applied Research Focus Areas
The research team at the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) operates at the intersection of agriculture and technology, driving innovation to meet industry needs. Our applied research division’s work spans controlled environment agriculture, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, robotic imaging, fermentation and food systems, all focusing on advancing sustainable practices and economic growth. We combine cutting-edge research with collaboration among industry and academia to support the evolving demands of modern agriculture and related fields.
Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA)
IALR’s Controlled Environment Agriculture Innovation Center, developed in partnership with Virginia Tech, is a critical research and training hub for advancing agricultural technologies. The CEA Innovation Center conducts research and educational programming to create, promote and advance the controlled environment agriculture sector in the U.S. and internationally.
Analytical Chemistry
The ISO 17025-accredited Analytical Chemistry Lab at IALR delivers precise chemical analysis and testing services to diverse global industries, including agriculture, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Leveraging advanced instruments and a highly skilled team, the lab provides accurate data, customized methodology development and ongoing support.
Robotic Imaging
IALR’s pioneering Spatially and Mechanically Accurate Robotic Table (SMART) Platforms utilize robotics, coding and automation to monitor and analyze plant growth. By capturing detailed images of plant growth every 15 minutes, researchers can continuously monitor plant health, development and stress responses under controlled experimental conditions, enabling new insights and industry advancements in agricultural research.
Biotechnology
Through the Plant Endophyte Research Center, IALR advances sustainable agricultural solutions globally, mainly focusing on biostimulants and biocontrol agents derived from beneficial microorganisms known as endophytes. With a comprehensive library of more than 2,000 identified strains, IALR collaborates with industry partners and academia to develop natural alternatives that enhance crop yields while reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
Fermentation
IALR’s collaborative fermentation training offers hands-on training and practical insights into industrial fermentation processes. These programs combine expert knowledge and practical experience to equip participants with the skills and technology to thrive in emerging fermentation markets.
Food System
IALR actively works to strengthen Southern Virginia’s local food system through the Value Chain Initiative, connecting producers with institutional buyers to support economic growth and agricultural diversity. By facilitating strategic partnerships, streamlining market access and addressing logistical challenges, the program enhances local producer profitability and increases the availability of regionally sourced products.
Our Research Approach
IALR’s applied research integrates cutting-edge technology, sustainable practices and scientific expertise to address real-world challenges in agriculture and biotechnology. Our team explores innovative solutions to catalyze economic transformation. By combining research, data analysis and emerging technologies, we aim to drive meaningful advancements that support regional and global industries.
IALR also allows polymer testing capabilities through the Advanced Materials Lab.
