IALR is committed to expanding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) capacity across Southern Virginia. We work with partners to ensure that students learn STEM concepts – and how those concepts relate to career opportunities – starting at a young age.

We do this through a variety of experiential educational programs, dual-enrollment opportunities, tutoring programs and summer activities.

Our mission is economic transformation. Improving STEM capacity for students of all ages enhances the workforce and results in an increase in quality job opportunities across our region.

Career Connections in Middle School

Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC®) is a talent pathway initiative that prepares students for STEM jobs. The funnel begins in middle school Career Connections Labs, which introduce students to career possibilities in welding, electrical engineering, vertical agriculture, mechatronics and many other sectors.

Summer STEM Fun

Every summer, IALR hosts STEM camps for students in elementary, middle and even high school. Campers spend each day completing engaging activities that teach concepts in math, engineering, technology and science in a memorable, age-appropriate way.

STEM and Literacy Tutors

STEM Educators with the Dan River Year AmeriCorps program focus on building and introducing curriculum and activities for students, helping prepare them for middle school to improve their literacy, math and/or STEM skills. These tutors provide direct and indirect service support to site(s) during summer camps, bridge programs and family STEM activities.

Dual-Enrollment Programs

Offered through a partnership with Danville Community College, IALR hosts two STEM-oriented dual-enrollment programs serving students in grades 11 and 12 in Pittsylvania County and Danville Public Schools. The Academy for Engineering and Technology (AET) provides students with immersive learning experiences focused on engineering theory, design and applications. The Piedmont Governor’s School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology offers a challenging, project-driven, research-based curriculum.

Field Trips and Loaner Equipment

Educators within the IALR service region are encouraged to borrow STEM equipment through the Loaner Lab Program and bring students on class field trips. After documenting training or completing training with IALR, educators can borrow equipment at no cost.

Customized to fit your needs, IALR can facilitate everything from hands-on science activities to tours of our labs and greenhouses.
