IALR’s Dan River Year (DRY) AmeriCorps program continues to celebrate the accomplishments of former members who successfully completed their terms. DRY AmeriCorps provides a community-supported environment to build capacity in the region, strengthen community involvement, and address pressing needs.

Former AmeriCorps member TyQuan Graves served two terms at Bonner Middle School where he mentored and tutored students needing assistance with science, math and/or reading. Upon completing the program, he went on to have a successful career as the youngest elected Danville School Board member and was recently sworn in as a City of Danville police officer.

“AmeriCorps was a pivotal point in my life,” said Graves. “While tutoring at Bonner, I began to identify the needs of the school and obstacles that students and teachers faced. It opened my eyes to do more and impact all of the schools, so I ran for the Danville School Board to make a difference.”

IALR is currently recruiting new AmeriCorps members to help lead IALR’s summer STEM camps. Members will serve as instructors who will provide direct and indirect service support during the summer camps, bridge programs and family STEM activities. Benefits include an allowance of at least $3,000 for the service term and eligibility for a Segal Education Award of $1,311.11 at the end of the term which can be used to pay student loans or for current and/or future education. Anyone interested in applying should submit a cover letter, resume, and contact information for at least three references to IALR Program Coordinator Dana Silicki at dana.silicki@ialr.org. More information is available at www.ialr.org/americorps.

Former AmeriCorps member TyQuan Graves credits his service experience at Bonner Middle School with originating his desire to join the Danville School Board. He also succeeded at being sworn in as a City of Danville police officer.
