The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) celebrated the graduation of the latest cohort of the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program on Feb. 27. The ceremony honored 18 adult learners who completed intensive training in non-destructive testing, a critical skill set for evaluating and ensuring the integrity of components within the defense manufacturing sector.

Each completer finished at least 600 hours of hands-on instruction over the past four months, preparing them for immediate employment within the maritime industrial base (MIB). This track equips students with the technical expertise to perform five high‑precision NDT processes — liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, visual testing, radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing — essential to national defense.

Sade’ Washington, NDT student speaker, shared reflections on the journey through the program, focusing on the opportunity that ATDM provides and the impact that these NDT professionals will have.

“We are not just making parts — we are building aircraft, powering submarines and supporting the systems that keep this country running. That’s not small; that’s legacy work.”Sade’ Washington, NDT student speaker

Roger Camp, Senior Director of Business Development – Naval Platforms at Hanwha Defense USA, served as the keynote speaker, highlighting the important role of maritime strength across U.S. history. He also gave graduates words of encouragement and advice to take into their new careers.

Ask for help when the mission is bigger than you — accountability doesn’t mean isolation,” Camp told the graduates. “Draw strength from people who know more than you and from those who simply show up when you need them.”
