IALR Analytical Chemist Yimeng “Jack” He recently shared the process,
instruments and techniques for analytical testing of hemp.
IALR recently held a lunch and learn event titled “Unraveling the Mystery of Hemp Testing,” featuring IALR Analytical Chemist Yimeng “Jack” He. In new, emerging markets such as hemp, safety and marketability testing is paramount to the growth and success of the industry. He explained the types and advantages of different testing equipment, the various testing services available and the process followed.
“The emerging hemp industry is undergoing an exciting time of growth, and we at IALR are happy to champion engagement and understanding across all stakeholders,” said Mark Gignac, IALR’s Executive Director. “Jack has a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as state-of-the-art testing equipment in our analytical chemistry lab that will benefit processors, producers and other groups seeking premier level testing at affordable rates.”
The free lunch and learn event included a complimentary lunch and a presentation of what happens in the lab to test the marketability and safety of hemp in today’s world. From the explanation of chromatography and cannabinoid profiling to the process of sample drying and analysis, He led the audience through important topics about why testing is important and how it is handled. A robust question-and-answer session followed on proper sampling and drying techniques, the importance of frequent testing and many more topics.
Part of the program emphasis was the critical need for uniform testing methodologies. He led the audience through the seven areas that can cause discrepancies between lab-to-lab test results, including sample collection, sample drying, sample preparation, sample degradation, extraction, instrumentation and detection method. IALR prides itself on successfully completing the 2018 University of Kentucky Hemp Proficiency Test. Participation in the 2019 test is now under way. IALR plans to use expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to play a role in developing uniform methods.
Industrial hemp was approved federally in 2018 and in Virginia earlier this year. The versatile crop is used to make a variety of commercial and industrial products.
