The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is seeking applicants for more than 40 AmeriCorps positions at various sites in the cities of Danville and Martinsville and in the counties of Halifax and Pittsylvania. Full-time and part-time opportunities are available and include multiple benefits like tuition assistance and a stipend. Candidates may view a complete list of descriptions and apply at http://bit.ly/americorpsjobs or attend a recruitment event Thursday, Aug. 8, at IALR from 1-4 p.m.
“AmeriCorps is a perfect opportunity for those seeking professional development and career growth while serving the community in a meaningful, rewarding way,” said Dr. Julie Brown, Director of Advanced Learning at IALR. “Those who enjoy mentoring and tutoring students would excel in our program.”
The positions are part of two AmeriCorps programs administered by IALR. The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program builds the area’s literacy and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) capacity through community engagement, K-12 and higher education student mentorship/tutoring, and other activities. The ServeIT AmeriCorps program fosters computer science and digital literacy, and serves as a pre-apprenticeship program to members.
The open positions are year-long commitments, beginning September 3, and include training. Dan River Year AmeriCorps Program members receive training on effective tutoring, classroom management, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, communication, performance evaluation and success coaching. ServeIT AmeriCorps Program members receive training on IT fundamentals, CompTIA A+ and Server+, coding, JavaScript, networking and general ticketing systems.
Those interested in applying are encouraged to attend the recruitment event at IALR on Aug. 8 from 1-4 p.m. Attendees should bring their resume and be prepared for on-site interviews. The computer lab will be available for those who need to update a resume, and current AmeriCorps members will talk about their experiences.
Candidates should be 18 years of age or older, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, have a GED or high school diploma and have a strong interest in K-12 education and IT/computer science.
