Students don’t need to have a finalized career plan to start preparing for the future. At the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), students and families can explore interests, gain real‑world exposure and build skills over time, from elementary school through early career.
Some experiences are part of the school day. Others are short camps or one‑day events. A few are competitive or more advanced. Families can engage where it makes sense now, knowing there are clear opportunities ahead when students are ready.

Students take many different paths after high school. Some pursue college immediately. Others gain experience through work, service or training first. All are valid options, and IALR supports students no matter where they start or how they choose to move forward.
STEM Camps and Early Exploration
Elementary and Middle School | Explore
Each summer, IALR offers in‑person STEM Camps designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in students from kindergarten through ninth grade. Most camps are geared toward rising 3rd–8th graders and combine hands‑on activities with real educational value.
Camp experiences are immersive, engaging and age‑appropriate. Students explore science, technology, engineering and math concepts through creative projects, design challenges and problem‑solving activities that make learning memorable and fun.
In addition to summer camps, IALR supports early STEM exploration through:
- Field trips to labs, classrooms and greenhouses
- Loaner Lab equipment that educators can borrow at no cost
These experiences help students connect what they learn in school to real‑world applications early.
Career Awareness in Middle School
Middle School | Explore
For many students, middle school is where career awareness begins.
Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC®) is a school‑based program offered during the school day in participating public school divisions. Students experience GO TEC as a class — not as an extracurricular or competitive program.
At its most basic level, the experience lasts nine weeks, though some schools offer multiple levels or require all students to participate.
In GO TEC, students explore STEM and manufacturing careers that are accessible, in-demand, and offer strong earning potential. GO TEC focuses on exposure and awareness, helping students see possibilities they may not have considered before.
Career Exposure Events
Middle and High School | Explore
Students should explore careers without committing to a pathway.
The Career ChoICE Youth Expo brings thousands of middle and high school students together with employers, educators and training providers from across the region every year. Students engage in hands‑on activities, see real equipment and learn about careers and training options available close to home.
Hosted every fall at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, the event is open to public, private and homeschool students.
Work-Based Learning
High School | Prepare
IALR supports short-term, school-based work-based learning experiences that help high school students build professional skills and explore careers without a long-term commitment.
These opportunities include:
- AspHIRE mock interview days, which prepare students for real job interviews
- Sector‑focused camps that introduce career opportunities in areas such as energy, construction and local government
- NOW Teamships, where students work as part of a team to solve a real problem for a real business with guidance from an educator or coach
These experiences help students build confidence, professionalism and career awareness while still in high school.
High School Pathways That Count
High School | Prepare
As students move through high school, they may want opportunities that build skills, count academically or provide early professional experience without locking in a final decision.
IALR hosts two STEM-focused dual‑enrollment programs through a partnership with Danville Community College: the Academy for Engineering and Technology (AET) and the Piedmont Governor’s School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology.
These programs serve students in grades 11 and 12 only in Pittsylvania County and Danville Public Schools. Students typically learn about these opportunities and attend open houses before reaching their junior and senior years.
Earn While You Learn
High School | Experience
For students ready for more responsibility, youth apprenticeships offer a paid, structured pathway.
Youth apprenticeships combine:
- Paid, on‑the‑job training from day one
- Related coursework aligned with Career and Technical Education (CTE)
- Mentorship from experienced professionals
Students may earn high school credit, postsecondary credit or industry‑recognized credentials. Many continue working full‑time with their employer after graduation, entering adulthood with real experience and a competitive edge.
Internships at IALR
College Students and Recent Graduates | Experience
IALR offers paid summer internships for graduating seniors, college students and recent graduates. Internships provide meaningful, professional experience across areas such as research, technology, data analysis, communications and operations.
Interns gain hands‑on experience, mentorship and connections that support long‑term career growth.
Serve and Gain Experience
Post‑High School | Experience
For students interested in making an impact while gaining experience, Dan River Year AmeriCorps offers a meaningful service opportunity. AmeriCorps is a strong option for students considering a gap year, career exploration or service‑based experience before or alongside further education.
AmeriCorps members serve in schools, community organizations and health‑focused settings, supporting STEM and literacy education, youth mental health and community health outreach. Service terms range from summer placements to full academic year roles.
Members receive a living allowance, training and mentorship and a Segal Education Award that can be used for tuition or student loan repayment.
Rapid Training for In‑Demand Manufacturing Careers
Post‑High School | Launch
For students interested in manufacturing careers who want to move quickly into the workforce, the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program offers a fast, focused path.
ATDM is a four‑month, intensive training program that prepares students for in‑demand manufacturing roles supporting the Submarine Industrial Base and defense suppliers across the country. The program has extremely high completion and placement rates, and tuition is covered through scholarships.
Advanced Machining Training
Postsecondary | Launch
For students who have already completed a two-year precision machining degree and are ready for advanced, leadership‑level training, the Integrated Machining Technology (IMT) program offers a next step.
IMT is a nine‑month program focused on advanced machining, systems thinking and leadership. Students manage the entire production process through a hands-on flow-cell model. Cohorts are small, the graduate placement rate is exceptional, and scholarships are available.
A program of Danville Community College delivered in partnership with IALR, IMT is designed as a capstone opportunity for students ready to specialize and lead.
STEM Scholarships
Graduating Seniors | Support
Graduating high school seniors planning to pursue STEM degrees may be eligible for IALR STEM Scholarships, awarded through the IALR Foundation.
These competitive scholarships support students from the IALR service region who plan to continue their education in science, technology, engineering or math fields. High school counselors share application information with eligible students.
