Books, Activities and Community Fun at Family Literacy Night
Family Literacy Night occurred on Thursday, March 13, at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR). Organized by IALR, Dan River Year AmeriCorps and REACH AmeriCorps, the event brought in 149 youth and their families.
Participants engaged with 37 interactive activity stations and nine resource stations, many of which were inspired by popular children’s books. A total of 82 volunteers helped make the night possible.
Activities included crafts like bracelet-making, a sack race, Lego and Play-Doh construction projects, book giveaways and more.

- Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM)
- The Tooth Fairy in Disguise
- Once Upon a Child
The evening included a concert by a choir of over 25 children from the Boys & Girls Club of the Danville Area.
Each student received a book from the Book Lady, totaling 149 books distributed during the event. Additional books were given away at some of the activity stations.

Family Literacy Night 2025
Dan River Year AmeriCorps, Danville Project Literacy and REACH AmeriCorps present Family Literacy Night on Thursday, March 13! This free event will feature dozens of stations where students can complete hands-on activities based on books.
In addition to activities, 100+ books will be given to the children who attend. The Chick-fil-A Cow and Dollar and Scotter, the mascots from URW Community FCU and Danville Otterbots, will be present to meet and pose for photos.

Family Literacy Night 2024
Dan River Year AmeriCorps, Danville Project Literacy, The Literacy Lab, and REACH AmeriCorps present Family Literacy Night on Thursday, March 14, to coincide with Pi Day! This event will feature 35 stations where students can complete a hands-on activity based on a book.
In addition to activities, 100+ books will be given to the children who attend. The Chick-fil-A Cow and Dollar and Scotter, the mascots from URW Community FCU and Danville Otterbots, will be present to meet and pose for photos.
During a special storytime segment, special guest and author, Lori Wilson, will read from her book “Tooth Fairy in Disguise.”

Family Literacy Night
Dan River Year AmeriCorps, Danville Project Literacy, AmeriCorps, and REACH AmeriCorps present Family Literacy Night on Thursday, March 2, to coincide with Dr. Seuss’s birthday and National Read Across America Day! This event will feature 29 stations where students can complete a hands-on activity based on a book.
In addition to activities, 300 books will be given to the children who attend. Dollar and Scotter, mascots from URW Community FCU and Danville Otterbots, will be present to meet and pose for photos. URW Credit Union will also give away the book Just Saving My Money. And finally, Storytime from Rachel Timm of the Pittsylvania County Public Library will take place at 6:00 p.m.!
