Family Literacy Night 2025
Dan River Year AmeriCorps, Danville Project Literacy and REACH AmeriCorps present Family Literacy Night on Thursday, March 13! This free event will feature dozens of stations where students can complete hands-on activities based on books.
In addition to activities, 100+ books will be given to the children who attend. The Chick-fil-A Cow and Dollar and Scotter, the mascots from URW Community FCU and Danville Otterbots, will be present to meet and pose for photos.

Evolving Service to Meet Regional Needs: the Story of the Dan River Year AmeriCorps Program
The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program began 10 years ago with the goal of growing the region’s STEM knowledge and skills, a major focus area for the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR).
In those years, the program, which is administered by IALR, has evolved to help students understand and get excited about science, technology, engineering and math and to provide literacy support and mentoring. Today, AmeriCorps members offer hands-on support in elementary schools and out-of-school and extracurricular activities that benefit students and those who serve.

The Program’s Origin and Evolution
In the early days of the Dan River Year AmeriCorps program, the focus was almost exclusively on enhancing STEM education for students and adult learners.
“We wanted a way to partner with other organizations to try to close that gap in STEM,” said Dana Silicki, Director of STEM, Service and Lifelong Learning at IALR.
During the early years, the programs and target audiences were broad, ranging from elementary schoolers to adults. Leaders in the participating school divisions were thrilled with the support but noted something important: students were falling behind with reading.
“In elementary school, students learn how to read. In middle school, they read to learn,” said Silicki.
So, the program adapted to become more targeted on both literacy and STEM education, primarily in 4th and 5th grade classrooms.

In addition to in-school tutors who work one-on-one—or in small groups— with students who need extra assistance, the Dan River Year program supports several regional after-school programs and IALR’s summer STEM Camps for elementary and middle school students.
By pairing literacy support with math and science lessons, the program ensures that students have the foundational skills needed to tackle more advanced STEM coursework. This approach, which fits into IALR’s commitment to expanding STEM capacity and providing opportunities for service learning, furthers IALR’s goal of driving economic transformation in Southern Virginia. Strong readers who develop technical knowledge are more likely to pursue higher-skilled jobs, strengthen local businesses and innovate as they grow.
Impact on Schools and Other Sites
Today, AmeriCorps members are embedded in classrooms in nine elementary schools between Danville and Pittsylvania County. The teachers and schools identify the students who need more personalized attention and support, and the members work with those students in small groups or even one-on-one to answer questions, re-explain concepts and mentor them.
“These members enhance what the teacher is doing,” Silicki said. “The students get that extra opportunity to have a little bit more one-on-one time to ask questions and receive the information in a slightly different way. That one-on-one and small group intervention benefits the students, giving them more attention and mentorship.”
Many schools rely on this extra support to ensure personalized attention for students.
“We are tightly staffed,” said Pittsylvania County Schools Superintendent Mark Jones. “This program provides some flexibility for principals, allowing them to fill gaps. We would not have that option without these AmeriCorps service members.”
The members who serve in the schools get to work with the same students for weeks or even months, seeing significant growth.
“It’s gratifying for the members because they see where the students are when they begin serving with them on day one, the first day of school,” said Audia Harris, Program Coordinator for IALR, who also served three terms with Dan River Year. “The members help the students feel comfortable not only with social and emotional skills but also with their learning and schoolwork.”
The classroom sites function very differently than the out-of-school sites. At the Danville Science Center, which has hosted members since the program began, members help design and lead various STEM-focused activities for people of all ages.
“They help to add depth, quality and quantity to the amount of public STEM programming that we can provide,” said Executive Director Adam Goebel.
There is no “template” AmeriCorps experience at the Danville Science Center. Instead, staff work with each member to determine their focus and experience based on their strengths and goals.
“The purpose of the program is to give these members real-world experiences in serving the public,” Goebel said. “Once they’re in the door, we help them figure out what they want to accomplish and how they hope to grow during their service term.”
Five AmeriCorps members who served at the Danville Science Center have accepted positions directly with the organization.
The Members’ Journey
Many AmeriCorps members say they gain as much from the program as the students. They come from varied backgrounds, including recent high school graduates, career changers and retirees looking to give back. They develop mentoring skills, teaching techniques and a deeper understanding of community needs.
“This position allows me to recognize the needs of our students in education while creating tutor strategies that will help the students to make better grades and increase social-emotional learning goals,” said Donna James, who is in her fourth term of service.
Audia Harris, Program Coordinator with IALR, served three terms herself before stepping into her current role. She now coordinates member training, organizes service projects and provides ongoing support. Her experience shows how an AmeriCorps service year can lead to bigger opportunities.
“My time in the program polished me for the next steps in my career path,” Harris said.
Many past members have already taken what they learned and leveraged it into new roles in education, nonprofits and beyond. In total, members have completed 222 terms of service.
Success Stories:
- Mikayla Ragsdale and Beth Bennett both served in the program, worked as teachers and are now principals with Danville Public Schools.
- Phillip Ashby served as a summer member before becoming a Montgomery County Public Schools teacher. He was recently named teacher of the year for the school division.
- Devinia Thorpe was so successful in her service term at Averett University that they created an employee position for her after completion of her AmeriCorps service.
Ashby spent the summer of 2017 serving at the Coates Recreation Center, Schoolfield Elementary School and helping with STEM Camps at IALR.

Anyone passionate about service is welcome to apply to join the program as an AmeriCorps member. With flexible terms ranging from five to 30 hours weekly, the program provides memorable opportunities for impact. Members receive a stipend and, upon completion of their term, a Siegel Education Award.
Evolving Impact
As the Dan River Year AmeriCorps program completes a decade, it continues to grow to meet regional needs. The plan is to add additional elements to the AmeriCorps program, including disaster services, youth mental health support and community health education.
“Moving forward, we will continue to evolve to meet the needs of the community and not just do something because that’s the way it’s been done in the past,” Silicki said. “We’re continuing to meet the community’s needs and impacting our service members, partners and those we serve.”

Career Readiness Starts Early
One of the most significant achievements last year was the expansion of the Great Opportunities in Technology and Engineering Careers (GO TEC®) program. Through a network of partnerships involving public schools, higher education and industry leaders, over 6,000 Virginia students received hands-on career introductions. GO TEC continues to inspire students and build dependable talent pipelines for strategic sectors, ensuring our youth are prepared for tomorrow’s careers.
GO TEC curriculum will be taught in 52 middle schools across the Commonwealth of Virginia during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Expanding Work-Based Learning Opportunities
The Expanding Talent through Registered Apprenticeship (ExTRA) program saw remarkable progress, supporting the creation of apprenticeship programs across nontraditional sectors. This year marked the launch of Virginia’s first Registered Apprenticeship programs for EMTs and paramedics. The program’s success demonstrates the importance of partnerships between employers, training providers and community organizations to meet our region’s workforce needs.
In partnership with IALR, the Danville Life Saving Crew – the primary Emergency Medical Services provider for the City of Danville – signed 13 individuals as Virginia’s first Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) registered apprentices during an October ceremony.
ExTRA Impact in Numbers:
- 50 new apprentices hired.
- 12 new Registered Apprenticeship programs created.
- Virginia’s first EMT and paramedic Registered Apprenticeship launched.
IALR was also selected to lead the Virginia Talent + Opportunity Partnership (V-TOP) Region 3 Regional Work-Based Learning Collaborative. This initiative develops opportunities for employers and students to connect through work-based learning – and prepares both students and employers for those opportunities.
Manufacturing Training Programs
The Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM) program continues to grow in partnership with the U.S. Navy, rapidly training talent for the defense industry. Approximately 328 students graduated across four cohorts in the 2024 fiscal year.
By 2025, the ATDM program aims to graduate 800 to 1,000 students annually, solidifying the region’s status as a hub for advanced manufacturing training.

Additionally, the Integrated Machining Technology (IMT) program, a legacy initiative of IALR and Danville Community College (DCC), remains a cornerstone of our manufacturing training efforts.
Advancing Economic Development in Southern Virginia
In collaboration with local governments, the Virginia Economic Development Partnership and the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance, our Economic Development team contributed to significant economic progress in the region. Over $212 million in new capital investments and the creation of 253 new jobs were key outcomes this year, providing a solid foundation for future economic growth. IALR also hosted essential events such as the 2023 Southern Virginia Regional Housing Summit and the 2024 Workforce Solutions Summit to support long-term development.

Advancing Additive Manufacturing
Through a series of strategic initiatives, IALR is advancing additive manufacturing (AM) technology, equipping end users with the skills needed to leverage these capabilities, and driving the growth of additive manufacturing across Southern Virginia. Much of this work is in partnership with the U.S. Navy through the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).

Initiatives in Additive Manufacturing:
- Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing (ATDM): Training adult learners with foundational skills in AM — alongside four other trades — in just four months.
- Naval Aviation School for Additive Manufacturing (NASAM): Training active-duty military personnel in two tiers of AM technologies in just six weeks.
- Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE): Developing AM technologies by creating technical data packages for parts the U.S. military needs. This project is located within IALR’s Center for Manufacturing Advancement.
- Additive Manufacturing & Advanced Materials Tech Hub (AM2 Tech Hub): Supporting Virginia as a hub through our membership in Virginia’s AM2 Tech Hub, dedicated to establishing Virginia as a leader in additive manufacturing and advanced materials adoption.
By combining training, technology development and partnerships, IALR is making significant strides in establishing Southern Virginia as a leading hub for additive manufacturing.
Collaborative Optimization for Manufacturers
As Virginia’s hub for high-performance manufacturing optimization and advancement, the Center for Manufacturing Advancement (CMA) equips manufacturers to be globally competitive. The CMA at IALR is the destination for innovative manufacturers ready to optimize their operations and scale. With state-of-the-art facilities and technology—including a CNC Machining Innovation Lab, Industry 4.0 Integration Lab and Precision Metrology Lab – the CMA is helping clients and partners optimize operations and scale.
Breakthroughs in Applied Research
IALR’s Applied Research division offers various services in controlled environment agriculture (CEA), analytical chemistry, biotechnology and life sciences. These include conducting contract research, providing chemistry testing services and supporting biotechnology development—all aimed at meeting the needs of industry partners and advancing the scientific community.

Conference Center Growth
Equipped with state-of-the-art and flexible facilities, the IALR Conference Center experienced impressive growth, hosting over 30,000 guests last year. This increase is a testament to its role as a vital space for collaboration across business, education and community sectors.

STEM, Service and Lifelong Learning

- 16,214 hours served by Dan River Year and REACH AmeriCorps members with partner schools, nonprofits and more.

Growing Campus to Meet Regional Needs
FY 2024 was notable for the growth of IALR’s campus and support services. The number of team members nearly doubled to meet increasing demands, reflecting the strength of the partnerships and the impact IALR has cultivated in Southern Virginia. With new facilities like the Navy’s National Training Center opening in early 2025, IALR is poised to continue driving regional growth and innovation.

Dan River Year AmeriCorps Recruiting 31 Members Thanks to AmeriCorps Continuation Grant
The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program is recruiting 31 part-time STEM and Literacy Tutors and Coaches for the 2024-2025 academic year who can build and introduce curriculum and activities for students. These AmeriCorps members will support upper elementary and middle school student gains in literacy, math and social-emotional learning by providing direct service in Pittsylvania County, Danville City and Martinsville City at local elementary and afterschool partner sites.

The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program is seeking In-School and Out-of-School Tutors who can provide direct and indirect support to site(s) during school and after school and for family science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities. Members work with 4th- and 5th-grade students individually and/or small groups at school sites as well as upper elementary/middle school students at informal learning locations. They focus on building and introducing curriculum and activities for students, helping prepare them for middle school by improving their literacy, math, STEM and/or social-emotional skills.
Members will provide direct service to students attending Pittsylvania County Public Schools and Danville Public Schools. All members will receive tutor training prior to placement. Tutors will spend a minimum of 90 minutes a week working with each individual student and/or small groups for a minimum of 10 weeks during the school year. Additionally, members may also work with groups during the school year, aiding in their reading or math classes. Members will provide support with hands-on activities to generate interest in STEM and deepen STEM knowledge.
Service dates are September 2024-August 2025 and range from five to 30 hours weekly. Stipends range from $4,200 (300 hours) to $13,500 (900 hours). Segal Education Awards for successful service completers range from $1,565 (300 hours) to $3,697 (900 hours).
This Dan River Year AmeriCorps program is ideal for recent high school graduates or college students seeking a gap year, those entering the education field, career switchers and retirees.

IALR is also hosting open interview days for both the Dan River Year AmeriCorps program and the REACH AmeriCorps program every Thursday until July 10.
IALR was awarded a $231,275 grant from AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, to fund this impactful program for its 10th year. AmeriCorps is the largest funder of national service in the country, matching organizations with individuals to address pressing challenges impacting communities.
This funding is part of a record-breaking AmeriCorps grant cycle that Serve Virginia recently announced, which will support 22 organizations across the Commonwealth in meeting the pressing needs in communities in the coming year, for a total investment of $6.7 million.
“Through its unique public-private partnership, AmeriCorps offers a critical mechanism for leveraging federal funding to meet community needs, benefiting communities across Virginia,” said Serve Virginia Director Kathy J. Spangler. As Virginia’s state service commission, Serve Virginia coordinates the annual grant cycle that awards funding.
The Dan River Year program mobilizes AmeriCorps members in a community-supported environment to build capacity in the region, strengthen community involvement and address pressing needs. AmeriCorps members focus on building the region’s STEM and literacy capacity. IALR also administers the public-health-oriented REACH AmeriCorps program, which recently received its own continuation grant from AmeriCorps.
AmeriCorps State and National, a federal-state partnership with a central role for Governor-appointed State Service Commissions, develops and implements state-specific national service programs. These grants allow organizations to recruit, train and supervise AmeriCorps members who are providing services to support education, disaster services, health, environmental stewardship, economic opportunity and service to veterans and military families.
AmeriCorps State and National annually engages more than 65,000 Americans in intensive service. AmeriCorps members in the AmeriCorps State and National program receive a modest living allowance. At the successful completion of each service term, members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Members aged 55+ when they begin service may gift their Segal Education Award to immediate family members.

Partners Unite for Successful Family Literacy Night at IALR
In a display of community collaboration, the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) hosted a successful Family Literacy Night on Pi Day, 3.14, underscoring its commitment to education and literacy.
The event was made possible through strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations dedicated to literacy advancement. Notable collaborators included Dan River Year AmeriCorps, The Literacy Lab, REACH AmeriCorps and The Joy of Reading – Jennifer Williams, who donated books for the event’s giveaway.
As a testament to the event’s impact, 150 guests participated, engaging in various literacy activities based on books. Fifty-six dedicated volunteers dressed up as book characters to run the activity stations and represented 13 community-based organizations.
Among the organizations represented by volunteers were the Danville Otterbots, Danville Project Literacy, URW and Dollar, Danville-Pittsylvania County United Way, Pittsylvania County 4-H Agent and Teen Leader, Danville 4-H, Center for Early Success, Tooth Fairy in Disguise, Pittsylvania County Library, Ruby B. Library, the Reading Cohort, as well as students and advisors from the Dan River High Interact Club and the Dan River High Beta Club.

AmeriCorps Open Interviews
Do you want to contribute to the long-term success of your community? Are you looking for a service opportunity where you can make a difference? The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is hosting open interviews for STEM/Literacy tutors and community health educators for the Dan River Year AmeriCorps and REACH AmeriCorps programs on February 26th.
- No appointment needed during the following time slots: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.m. The interviews are in room 216 at IALR, 150 Slayton Avenue, Danville, VA 24540.

Dan River Year AmeriCorps
The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program is seeking In-School and Out-of-School Tutors who can provide direct and indirect support to site(s) during school and after school and for family STEM activities. Members will focus on building and introducing curriculum and activities for students, helping prepare them for middle school by improving their literacy, math and/or STEM skills.
Members will provide direct service to students attending Pittsylvania County Public Schools and Danville Public Schools. All members will receive tutor training prior to placement. Tutors will spend a minimum of 90 minutes a week working with each individual student and/or small groups for a minimum of 10 weeks during the school year. Additionally, members may also work with groups during the school year, aiding in their reading or math classes. Dan River Year AmeriCorps
The Dan River Year AmeriCorps program is seeking In-School and Out-of-School Tutors who can provide direct and indirect support to site(s) during school and after school and for family STEM activities. Members will focus on building and introducing curriculum and activities for students, helping prepare them for middle school by improving their literacy, math and/or STEM skills.
Members will provide direct service to students attending Pittsylvania County Public Schools and Danville Public Schools. All members will receive tutor training prior to placement. Tutors will spend a minimum of 90 minutes a week working with each individual student and/or small groups for a minimum of 10 weeks during the school year. Additionally, members may also work with groups during the school year, aiding in their reading or math classes. Members will also provide support with hands-on activities to generate interest in STEM and deepen STEM knowledge.
REACH AmeriCorps
The REACH AmeriCorps program is seeking community health educators to serve approximately 25 hours a week over nine months (September 2023-August 2024) in Danville, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County, N.C. REACH AmeriCorps members will conduct workshops over 40 weeks in targeted census tracts in Danville City, Pittsylvania County and Caswell County. Workshops will be based on specific population health topics, addressing areas of high need and chronic health issues. Members will serve approximately 25 hours/week.
Members will receive training and mentoring from IALR staff and site representatives.

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) is hosting open interviews for STEM/Literacy tutors and community health educators for the Dan River Year AmeriCorps and REACH AmeriCorps programs on September 25.
- No appointment needed during the following time slots: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 – 4 p.m. The interviews are in room 216 at IALR, 150 Slayton Avenue, Danville, VA 24540.
- Stipends range from $3,600 – $11,500. Segal Education Awards are also available.
- Multiple positions available in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
